In a turn of events I have switched to focus on a lifestyle change instead of my original plan for the Read 'n'seed.
My SMART goal?
I'm going to commit to one, but attempt to eat 2 local meals a week.
I wanted to do this last year when the locavor challenge was a focus at Whole Foods. They were encouraging even just 1 meal a month minimum just to get started. I didn't do a great job. I did, however start becoming aware of what was local at the co-op and made some more local food choices. This time I want to commit to a local meal one time a week but push for 2. I love the idea of buying from people that live in my area who work hard to provide us food. I love that it is closer to home. That you can more easily meet the people who grow the food. I love that it has traveled less time in a truck and taken less fuel to get to me. I also love that it is more fresh than some foods that are picked before they are ripe and the nutrients are not ready for our bodies to process, sprayed with chemicals and colors to make them look ripe.
My success so far?
I was encouraged when we were eating soup for Sunday's lunch and realized everything we were eating was local in our soup. It was chicken soup with a lot of root veggies. Joel had cooked off the chicken and saved the broth. It was SOOOO GOOD! The chicken and the root veggies and parsley were purchased at various farmers markets here in town.
This time the success of the goal came without planning. I have had thoughts of paying more attention to this and we have been attempting to get to farmers markets more. Now with this goal it is less of a casual thought and becomes a planned event to get food for my meals. It will be fun to go to the market and create a meal or two when I'm there.
I learned that local food can be SO YUMMY! That soup ROCKED!
I will continue my goal as is for the moment.

Read 'n' Seed 1 - Hormone Deception
For my Read 'n" Seed project I am reading the book Hormone Deception by Lindsey Berkson.
It is about our exposure to man-made hormone disrupting chemicals and the effects on our health that is unknown yet, but evidence is pointing to some major world wide health effects. She shares where we might find these chemicals, suggests ways that we might minimize this and ways to detoxify.
I chose this book, out of the many I wanted to read, because this has been something I have been learning about and working on for myself recently. I know that I am hormonally sensitive and my mother died of breast cancer and I really want to be more aware and able to take care of myself the best I can. I know it is a challenge because it is EVERYWHERE. There is a lot to learn.
A few links to share about the book

This book has 421 pages divided up in 3 parts with 15 chapters. The appendices start at 299. I will reserve that part for the last and 4th week. I will read, for the most part, the rest in the first3 weeks.
Week 1 I will read the preface information and Part 1. This is through chapter 4 starting on page 61.
Week 2 I'll read Part 2 starting on page 77 with chapter 5 through chapter 11 on page 203.
Week 3 starts with the introduction to part 3 and Chapter 12 called Food and Drink on page 211 through chapter on page 281.
Week 4 I'll read through the 4 appendices starting on page 299 continuing through the end of the book.
The book has arrived and thus I have amended this poster with an updated reading schedule after seeing how the book is divided out.
It definitely looks enlightening and depressing.

Judy's cloud contempletory introduction
Welcome to Judy's Cloud Contemplations!!
I'm a student at the University of Minnesota of Duluth. A Community Health Education and philosophy major with a psychology minor. I love living in Duluth for many reasons. I, however, would be thrilled if we could keep it from snowing and creating ice on the sidewalks. This would make the winters FAR more enjoyable.
The origins and inspiration for this outlet of expression are my Environmental Health class here in Duluth, MN.
What will this blog include? Well, that is still a mystery. The assignment sheet of course gives me a guide, but, knowing me I'll get off topic and find tangents to add to my collection of directions. Like clouds my thoughts, creativity, writing and living are sometimes very distinct and separated both nebulous and sometimes more defined shapes. And others are all mushed together in a very unified, solid, clearly defined way, yet others come together, bump into each other, grab a little bit from another cloud and move along together or blow a different direction.
So....
We will all find out what will be contained within together.

Thank you again for stopping by. I'll do my best to keep this fun, interesting, thought provoking and... I'd say educational however that isn't usually a word that keeps 'em coming back.
Happy reading and keep your head in the clouds.
